The Popularity of Mid-Size Luggage

!±8± The Popularity of Mid-Size Luggage

Remember when those jumbo suitcases were the most popular pieces of luggage? For the longest time, everyone thought bigger was better! Why buy a mid sized piece of luggage when the larger size was only slightly more expensive? There was usually only a ten-dollar difference between the price of the two sizes. It made sense to buy the biggest you could. Then you could pack everything you might ever need, plus more. There were no real restrictions on the size or the weight of luggage you could take on an airplane. Some airlines allowed only seventy-five pounds, which was a lot of weight to pack. The airlines were also pretty lenient about checking size and weight. Rarely did luggage ever go over the weight restrictions.

Of course, things are different now. Airlines are allowing only fifty pounds on most flights, and they are being pretty strict. They have a size restriction also, and a case cannot be larger than sixty-two linear inches. The 28" or 29" Pullman sizes are generally within the size requirement. You have to add the height of the luggage, plus the width, plus the depth. It's a good idea to check with your individual airline because each airline may have slightly different requirements. Additionally, coach, business class and first class may have different restrictions. You can also simply elect to pay the surcharge. Remember, you may be charged for each leg of the trip. Since many travelers like to avoid the surcharges, the mid-sized luggage that was virtually ignored is becoming very popular. The size of the mid-size luggage is 26" or 27" tall. It usually will not go over the fifty-pound weight restriction by the airlines unless packed with very heavy items such as books. Virtually every luggage company makes one of these sizes.

Some couples are taking one of their larger sized pieces of luggage and packing only lightweight clothes into it. Most clothing is pretty light with the exception of some pairs of jeans. Then they are putting their cosmetics, toiletries and shoes in the smaller sized Pullman case. Since clothing is pretty light and the shoes and cosmetics are what add the weight, this way of packing really makes sense. You can use the 27" size for longer trips and the 26" size for shorter trips. Additionally, if the case is expandable that lets you be more flexible with the size needed. You can expand the case for longer trips or when you need to take a little more. If you wish to avoid the surcharges, you'll need to become more organized on what you plan to pack.

Another option is to send some of your heavier items ahead to your destination. Be sure to check with your hotel, as some have storage fees for holding packages. In the smaller pieces of luggage, you will need to have a plan and pack smarter. Don't bring large sizes of toiletries. Either purchase smaller sized containers, or pick up small bottles and pour from your larger sizes. Shoes tend to weigh more than a shirt, so try to bring fewer pairs of shoes. If you need boots, think about wearing them on the plane and packing your shoes. Some sneakers also are heavy so limit the number of pairs you're taking.

Additionally, pack socks or smaller items inside. Heavy coats can be carried onto the plane. Shoes and bulky clothing can be carried on in your carry on luggage. Cosmetics can only be carried on in three-ounce containers or smaller, and they must be placed in a clear plastic one-quart sized bag. Only one of these per person can be carried on. These are called the three-one-one case by the TSA. In the past, cosmetics were always put in the carry on luggage, so this is a new way of packing that we must get accustomed to. We all know that we rarely wear everything we pack, so it really it isn't that much of a hardship to bring along less. The advantages of the mid-sized luggage are quickly obvious to travelers today.

What's What With Luggage

!±8± What's What With Luggage

There's a lot of luggage manufactured today. It comes in every color and every type of quality. It's hard to know what's what! Even the well known brands make so many different lines in so many different qualities you're not quite sure what you're buying. You don't want to over pay when it's not necessary. Yet, you don't want to be forced to replace your luggage every other year either.

Let's begin at the beginning. Brand names are important, because you know there's years of experience behind the name. This doesn't mean a "designer" name that has just popped up will be a quality item. Luggage brands that have been around for years are Skyway, Samsonite, Tumi, Hartmann, and Boyt.

Some of the newcomers that have earned a very good reputation are Victorninox Swiss Army, Briggs & Riley, Prolite and Mosaic. When making your purchase, be sure to read the warranty information. All of the warranties differ in what they offer. Some do not cover airline or other carrier repairs, and some will. Also check if the place of purchase will do the warranty repair. Airlines are tough on baggage, so your luggage may someday need minor components fixed. If you can bring it back to the place of purchase, this will save you the trouble of having to pack up the case and ship it to be repaired. Additionally, the shipping can be quite expensive.

The very best material in luggage is Ballistic nylon. You may see the term "ballistic" without the word "nylon." Look for "Ballistic nylon" as nylon is the strongest fabric. The higher the denier the more threads in the fabric. Once again, this is only important when it is "Ballistic nylon" as the other fabrics are not quite as durable. Many of them shred when overstuffed, or thrown around on conveyer belts. You will note that almost all of the better brands, and most of the more expensive lines of luggage are made of "Ballistic nylon." Other important features would be "inline skate ball bearing wheels" and the "locking trolley handle." The inline skate wheels are the best wheels for rolling on different surfaces that you may encounter, such as carpeting, concrete, cobblestones, as well as tile. Ball bearings will insure that the wheels glide smoothly. The locking trolley handle will allow you to push the luggage along as well as pull. In some crowded areas, or where you need to board a train or mini train at airports, you will need this pushing feature. If the handle won't lock, the luggage will be very difficult to handle. This type of trolley handle also makes "piggybacking" another piece of carry on luggage or tote bag very easy and comfortable.

Always lift the luggage before deciding. Many pieces of luggage will say "lightweight". However, when you actually lift the piece of luggage it is anything but light! If you are doing a lot of airline travel, as opposed to cruse lines or train and bus travel, the weight of luggage is important. Many airlines now charge extra for overweight luggage, and the costs can be considerable. Also, check that the size remains within the airlines requirements of 62". This is linear inches, consisting of adding the height, the width, and the length of the case. Most of the luggage companies have reduced the size and weight of their luggage to comply with the airlines new requirements. Be sure you're not looking at an older model. Locks must also be TSA approved for airline travel and must say TSA on the lock. This allows TSA security personnel to be able to open your luggage with a master key should the need arise.

Look inside the luggage. Are there any features that you need when traveling? Some luggage has a removable suit fixture or garment bag inside. Some have many pockets, while other cases have fewer pockets. Some brands have large outside pockets. Other brands have only a small outside compartment. Most of the brands have the trolley handle inside the luggage. Some of these trolley handles take up a lot of room inside the luggage. Other brands have a flatter inside handle, or a padded area. One of the brands has the trolley handle on the outside the bag, so that you lose no room inside for packing. Which of these features are important to you? You also need to decide how much you will be traveling. Frequent travelers find the investment of the better brands to be cost saving in the long run. The luggage will last, and need fewer repairs. People that travel less frequently, can purchase one of the more popular priced brands. Now that you know the important features to look for before you buy, you also know "what's what about luggage!"

Travel With the Best Luggage

!±8± Travel With the Best Luggage

As people travel more and more, whether it is for jobs or vacation or simply a get-away trip, they discover more and more the importance of good luggage. Airports are becoming more and more strict on what you are allowed to bring and what size luggage you're allowed to use, and that's not even taking into account the fact that they are starting to charge for every suitcase you bring. As a result, the importance of getting the best luggage is tremendous.

One of the first facets of travel to consider is the use of carry-on luggage. This option is important because it is the set of luggage you will have with you the entire trip. When possible, it is worth making this your only luggage as it can reduce your risk of having your bags lost or damaged. People like that comfort of knowing their stuff is safe, so bringing it on is the perfect option. Furthermore, using carry-on luggage exclusively means you can avoid waiting forever in the baggage claim section.

When it comes to both carry-on and regular luggage, a great option to consider is wheeled luggage. Using luggage with wheels means you can carry a significantly greater weight without having to worry about struggling to carry it. Simply pulling your suitcase along is low stress and makes walking through the airport a relaxing experience. While the wheels can make the suitcase larger or heavier, it's ultimately worth it for the reduced stress.

An important part of finding the best luggage is buying from good luggage brands. While you can always buy the cheapest suitcase you can find, it increases your chance of getting a poor product. You don't want to have to stress over whether your suitcase is going to rip open in transit and leave all your contents spilled for everyone to see. And further, you don't want to worry about the bag not being able to protect your stuff and letting it get damaged. It's worth looking at big name brands like Antler luggage, Swiss Army luggage, or Tumi luggage, and spending a few more dollars on a product that will get you where you want to go with everything you need.

As a final consideration, think about the types of suitcases you want to bring. Do you want a hard shelled suitcase that will keep your belongings safe but will be difficult to form and fit wherever you need it? Or would you rather have a fabric suitcase that is more easily conformed, but offers less protection of your belongings? The options go on, from wheeled suitcases to duffel bags with every option offering its own share of pros and cons. Try and look at all different types of suitcases and see which one works best for you.

Overall, shopping for a good suitcase can be difficult work. It requires you to look around at a number of different companies and really evaluate the type of traveling you will be doing. By the time you are done, you will probably need a number of different styles, but it will be worth it.
